Overview

As a fourth grader at South Green Elementary School in Glasgow, Kentucky, Jonas Bastien wore a suit to school and told everyone he could that he was going to be a lawyer. For Jonas Bastien, practicing law is nothing short of a lifelong dream—and he’s put in a lifetime of effort to achieve it. From the beginning of his education, he knew that he wanted to be an advocate for others, working towards solving their problems as if they were his own. After graduating from the University of Louisville with a B.A. in political science, he continued his education at the University of Kentucky Rosenberg School of Law, where he received his J.D. At UK, he served as president of the Student Bar Association, contributed to The Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Law, and founded the Bourbon Legal Society.

After taking part in McBrayer’s Summer Associates program, Jonas has been admitted to the Kentucky Bar and now joins McBrayer as an Associate attorney, practicing in McBrayer’s healthcare law group in Lexington, Kentucky. To Jonas, the field of healthcare law presents a wide variety of complex legal puzzles to which he can apply his ever-growing legal knowledge and well-developed analytical skills. Jonas’s practice focuses on healthcare regulatory, transactional, and corporate law, in his representation of healthcare providers and suppliers and other participants in the healthcare industry. Federal and state regulatory and compliance issues require constant attention as the healthcare field is one of the most regulated industries in our nation. Jonas regularly counsels healthcare industry clients on matters involving physician employment agreements and negotiations, physician referral rules, certificates of need, privacy and security of health information, corporate documents and compliance programs, fraud and abuse (Anti-kickback Law, Stark II, etc.), and licensure and business matters. Representative clients include estheticians, med-spas, physicians, health systems, physician practices both large and small, nursing facilities, laboratory providers, and others industry participants.

In addition to his work in the healthcare field, Jonas focuses on civil litigation. His work in this area includes breach of contract, enforcement of contractual rights, medical malpractice, qui tam litigation, and Certificate of Need applications and hearings. His previous experience in this area allows him to be a more effective advocate on behalf of his clients at every level.

Outside of his work at McBrayer, Jonas is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the American Inns of Court as well as being a member of the Kentucky Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Executive Committee and a Board Member of the Lexington Chamber Music Festival. He also serves on the University of Louisville Martin Luther King Junior Scholars Program Alumni Council and Community Advisory Committee. In his spare time, Jonas enjoys Chito-ryu karate, golf, playing the piano, and outdoor activities such as hiking and camping.
